Modernity is an issue that would have forced the shapeless form of the text of many of Nostradamus' verses. How could it be otherwise when its initial readership lay in a much older world where modern terms were unknown? In the next few chapters I want to show how the modernity issue is resolved within the prophecies.

My aims for this book are twofold with one being the removal of the cloud Nostradamus knew covered his verses. The other is to try and show the remarkable interconnectivity of the anagrams and what they contribute to the resolution of each prophecy.

There is a vast and deep chasm between what is considered possible and the futuristic anagrams that manifest themselves in Nostradamus' work. There is no known mechanism, other than chance, to explain their occurrence; yet Nostradamus' description of the origin of his prophecies does offer a possibility.

C1 Q1
Sitting alone at night in secret study,
it is placed on the brass tripod.
A slight flame comes out of the emptiness
making prosper that which shouldn't be believed in vain.

But there is the enigma once again since his process lies outside known bounds. This means his work can only be valid if the above words are true. So for the prophecies to be prophetic we would be forced to conclude he relied on a subliminal source, angelic voices and  astronomic calculations to predict the future.

The enigma leaves open the possibility that Nostradamus was aware of earthly processes that interface with a view of time different than that currently considered possible.

I believe the nature of the anagrams in his prophecies defy the laws of chance and it is they that give validity to his words on his process. It is only by the anagrams that each verse can be ascribed an unambiguous date, event and reason for inclusion. It is only when there is the completeness that they offer that we can be in a position to judge whether this ancient work provides us with solid evidence for the science and art of future-seeing. .

..such secrets are of events that should not be manifested except in enigmatic sentences having, however, only one direction and a unique meaning, and nothing shall be put [into it] that is ambiguous nor anything of ambiguous calculation...1558 Epistle to Henry (HEE6a)

My aim in this chapter is to show that Nostradamus' major themes have strong linkages with modern genetic theory and practice. Now Wikipedia identifies key components for each of  its entries and that for Genetics lists the keys as chromosome, DNA, RNA, genome, mutation, heredity, nucleotide and variation so in the verses that I present in this section of my work I shall concentrate on those holding these ciphers and closely allied terms.

I begin by presenting two verses that illustrate how Nostradamus structures verses about genetics relate to more ancient times. The  group to which they belong generally include the term issued from or refer to a blood line.

C5 Q39 C3 Q59
Issued from the true branch of the fleur-de-lis,
Placed and lodged as heir of Etruria
His ancient blood woven by long hand,
He will cause the escutcheon of Florence to bloom.
Barbarian empire usurped by the third
The greater part of his blood he will put to death
Through senile death the fourth struck by him
For fear that the blood through the blood be not dead

.

At this point I want to connect this theme to the time zone when Nostradamus' genetic themes take place.

Eugenics in the modern era leads to changes in humankind.

To illustrate the connection with what I have already presented I begin with verse C2 Q46 and compare it to a verse I used to show that the 100 year-period of mutation refers to the turning point of the heavenly axle from 2100 to 2100CE when the current pole star reaches its closest point to the North Celestial Pole.

In C2 Q46 The Great mover renews the ages correlates directly to this event and has immediate ties to the language used in C1 Q54 where the third line says The mobile sign thus moves into its place.

C2 Q46 C1 Q54
After great trouble for humanity a greater one is near
The Great Mover renews the ages:
Rain, blood, milk, famine, steel and plague,
In the heavens fire seen, a long spark running.
Two revolutions made from the evil scythe
making a permutation of reign and centuries.
The mobile sign thus moves into its place:
At two [times] of equal worth and inclination.

Apres grat troche humain plus grad s'appreſte
Le grand moteur les ſiecles renouuelle
Pluye ſang laict, famine, fer et peste
Au ciel veu feu courant longue eſtincelle.
Deux reuolts faicts du maling falcigere
De regne et Siecles faict permutation
Le mobil Signe a Son endroict Si ingere
ux deux egaux et d'inclination.

The linking of these two verses is made even stronger by the first mentioning topics such as rain, famine, plague and fire in the sky since these are the major elements in Nostradamus' account of this crucial period determining man's future.

..and I find that the world before the universal conflagration will experience many deluges with inundations so high that there will be no soil that is not covered by water; and this will be for such a long time that all would be lost except for the records of enographies and topographies. Also before and after such inundations, in most countries, the rains will be in demand, and from the heavens will fall a great abundance of fire and white-hot stones, so nothing shall remain that is not consumed. And all this is to occur, in brief, before the last conflagration...1555 Cesar Preface (PCE8)

So it is quite credible to see these two verses as part of a single story and that story has identifiable links to genetics. C1 Q54 has the key word agennos which is Greek for begotten without a father while the second line of text holds permutation. Splitting the latter word into two it becomes by(per) mutation. There is also a weak possibility the second line holds anagrams for 'gene site' and so we have the emerging pattern of birth without a father created by mutation of a gene site all of which hints at modern genetics.

In the first of the above verse pair, C2 Q46, I have highlighted one of the four anagrams for eugenist (gue eſtin) that occur in the Prophecies. It is followed by an anagram for cell (cell). This modern terminology refers to someone who attempts to improve humanity by breeding for selected attributes. In C1 Q54 I have also highlighted an adjacent anagram pair for flaming dust (ts du - maling f) which reinforces the links these verses have to the above fiery quote from the Preface. The implication is these verses relate to the time at the end of this century when meteorite-based material is used to manipulate the attributes of humankind.

Genetic language found as anagrams in verses about this century.

The next verse C1 Q52 lies close to one of those given above and to others that define the 100 year period 2000 to 2100CE. Its content provides clear evidence that Nostradamus' mutation in the 21st century comes about through religion using the revolution in the understanding of man's genetic origin to achieve an ideological goal. It is only in this century that man has had high speed analytical techniques that allow us to know the secret code of the chromosomes.

This makes our biological evolution dangerously different from all that's gone before. Genetic history up to this point in time has been glacially slow but now we enter times of explosive mutation.

C1 Q52
Two evil influences in conjunction in Scorpio.
The great lord is murdered in his room.
A newly appointed king persecutes the Church,
the lower (parts of) Europe and in the North.
Les deux malins de Scorpion conjoinct (endosopric, nucleotidase)
Le grand ſeigneur meurtry dedans ſa ſalle (alleles)
Peste a l'eglise par le nouueau Roy joinct (pectin)
L'eu
rope baſſe et Septentrionale. (saprobes)

The first line of text of the above verse has the same vaguely threatening astronomic tones as found in the two already discussed in this chapter while the third ties these threats to religious war. And this theme is at the heart of Nostradamus' Prophecies for this current century. This would imply that the wars to come are no common wars but vastly worse than ever before. But such a deviant war scenario wasn't true of the sixteenth century. Yet it is true great religious revolutions were underway during Nostradamus' life and afterwards there occurred religious tribulations and retributions equaling the most notable of human history.

But these plus many revolutions, removal of kings and kingdoms and two World Wars are put into the minor scale of horrendous acts when Nostradamus speaks of the wars to come in his Preface and his Epistle.

...we know the mortal sword approaches with plague and a war due to the lives of three men that is more horrible than there has never been...1555 Cesar Preface (PCE8).
All the Kingdoms of Christianity will tremble, even those of the infidels, for the space of twenty-five years. And there will be many grievous wars and battles, and towns, cities, castles and all other edifices that will be burned, desolated and destroyed. With great effusion of vestal blood married woman and widows will be violated and raped and sucking children dashed and broken against the walls of towns. By means of Satan, Prince Infernal, so many evils will be committed that nearly all the world will find itself undone and desolated...1558 Epistle to Henry (PCE26b).

This background of horrendous war makes it all the more notable that C1 Q52 (verse given above with anagrams below) has several anagrams closely tied to genetic change. This triad of religion, war and science may well be what Nostradamus meant with his first line of text Two evil influences in conjunction in Scorpio.

The anagrams point directly to the evil influence being a scientific manipulation of the genetic structure. In the first line there are anagrams for nucleotides (oinct Les deu) and endosporic (de Scorpion); in the second line there is one for alleles (ſalle Le) while the third and fourth contain pectin (inct Pe), pectates (ct Peste a) and saprobes (rope baſſ) respectively. The meaning of these words given below establishes there is a biological basis in this verse invoving change within the living cell.

  • alleles: alternative forms of the same gene or same genetic locus.
  • nucleotide: one of the compounds into which nucleic acid is split by action of nuclease; nucleotides are composed of a base (purine orpyrimidine), a sugar(ribose or deoxyribose) and a phosphate group.
  • endospore: a dormant, tough, and non-reproductive structure produced by certain bacteria. It isn't a true spore but a stripped-down, form to which the bacterium can reduce itself.
  • saprobe: an organism, usually referring to a fungus, that feeds on dead or decaying organic matter.
  • pectin: a polymer of sugar acids of fruit that forms gels with sugar at the proper pH
  • pectates: the rigid outermost cell layer found in plants and certain algae, bacteria, and fungi but characteristically absent from animal cells.

Genetic trait variation used to classify people.

The text of verse C2 Q20 with its talk of brothers and sisters undergoing examination for blemishes clearly demonstrates Nostradamus' concern about improper use of genetic traits.  Supporting this genetic story line are two anagrams found in the fourth line which form normative (ant voir meand variations (aiſant voir).
C2 Q20
Brothers and sisters captive in diverse places
Will find themselves passing near the monarch:
Contemplating them his branches attentive,
Displeasing to see the marks on chin, forehead and nose.
Freres et ſeurs endiuers lieux captifs
Set rouueront paſſer pres du monarque
Les contempler ſes rameaux ententifz
Des plaiſant voir meton, front, nez, les marques.

Verse C2 Q22 differs from C2 Q20 by its genetic story being more deeply concealed in its anagrams. It has words that are very modern and relate to genetic-style heredity. This is in stark contrast to C2 Q20 where the text alludes to judging heredity by visible marks and attributes. The text of C2 Q22 however tells the story of a modern or future expedition and the emerging of a different species with a different means of communication.

This interpretation is supported by anagrams for genome (gee Nom) and anthropogenic (oignant proche) where the latter word refers to agents created by man. This verse becomes a critical contributor to the last of Nostradamus' stories about humankind.

C2 Q22
The imprudent army of Europe will depart,
Collecting itself near the submerged isle:
The weak fleet will bend the phalanx,
At the navel of the world a greater voice substituted.
Le camp Ascop d'Europe partira
S'adjoignant proche de l'iſle ſubmergee
D'Arton claſſe phalange pliera
Nombril du monde plus grand voix ſubrogee.

Evolution of a new species that is superior to humankind.

Amongst the absolute uncertainties such as death we can be absolutely certain that if life survives on this planet, evolution will move on and this is the context for verse C3 Q8.

There will come a time when humankind will be down-placed and depending on how we respond to this we may not survive as a species.

The most likely reaction from humankind at the potential arrival of a new superior species is to attempt to extinguish it but such efforts are usually no match for the inevitable forces of nature.

This is the theme that underpins Nostradamus' story in the verse given below and it is determined by anagrams such as spermatogenic (t compaigne Se), generations (aigne Seront), Pelagiusene (ue l'ESpaigne), Pope (epop), manages mission (Gens ama - imoSins) . Pelagiusenes refers to people who reject the idea of predestination which is a term likely to become prominent when there is a species where many individuals can read the future.

C3 Q8
The Cimbri joined with their neighbors
Will come to ravage almost all of Spain:
Peoples gathered in Guienne and Limousin
Will be in league, and will bear them company.
Les Cimbres joint ſauec ques leurs voiſins
De populer viendront preſque l'Eſpaigne
Gens amaſſez guienne et Limoſins
Seront en ligue et leur feront compaigne.

The wars following the genesis of a new species.

The verse below is one of only three to have an occurrence of anagrams for generations and in each case the term is enriched by other genetic-related words. This is particularly true of C3 Q38 where generations (tion eſtrange) is accompanied by genesis (s ſeigne), cancers (rs en acc), cancerous (urs en acco) and eugenesis (s ſeigneu). These are rare anagrams since eugenesis only occurs in this verse while there is one other for cancerous and genesis has five other occurrences.

C3 Q38
The Gallic people and a foreign nation
Beyond the mountains, dead, captured and killed:
In the contrary month and near vintage time,
Through the Lords drawn up in accord.

La gent Gauloiſe et nation eſtrange
Outre les monts morts prins et profligez
Au mois contraire et proche de vendange
Par les ſeigneurs en accord redigez.

I chose each of the above verses to show the dimensions of Nostradamus' usage of genetic terms and in chapters to follow I will show how their text ties into the major story line of humankind 's evolution. It is likely that Nostradamus' interest in this new science was because of its usage to resurrect the Christ figure and the dreadful consequences of that action.

The Christ resurrection story dominates much of the Prophecies and its accompanying papers, so genetic terms emerge in a wide range of stories about the modern era and those that follow.

In achieving this coverage I have shown how the key components used by Wikipedia to define its page on genetics are clustered together in Nostradamus' Prophecies producing a picture of humankind 's evolution.
